Wildfires in Los Angeles: Voices from the Ground 17,000 burned

As five wildfires rage in Los Angeles, survivors describe their experiences. The fires have burned more than 17,000 acres, caused evacuations, destroyed nearly 2,000 buildings, and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes.

One occupant, Alec Gellis, recounted a last-minute escape through a “vortex of embers” after his girlfriend’s house was burned. “No oxygen,” he said, recalling the terrifying experience.

For one couple, decades of labor went to the ground as their museum, where the world’s largest bunny collection once lay, was demolished. “We put our museum up 40 years ago, and it’s just gone,” they said.

Children in Los Angeles cried as the sky turned red and there was smoke. “The sun is red, the air is filled with smoke, and there’s smoke in our lungs,” they said.

Residents of Sunset Boulevard, where many of its buildings are now demolished, referred to the scene as “total conflagration” as fires burned banks, cafes and supermarkets.

The flames are still devastating, leaving Los Angelesites reeling from destruction and ambiguity.
