Just a few hours before a newly instituted law restricting the social media app came into force, TikTok has terminated its operations within the United States. Users who wish to log into TikTok are greeted with the message, “You can’t use TikTok for now.”
According to reports, and based on legislation upheld by the Supreme Court in conjunction with TikTok, the parent company in China, ByteDance was mandated to sell the app before 19th January 2025, failing which its usage would be banned.
Donald Trump, President-elect, suggested a possible three-month period for TikTok to find a buyer, while also mentioning, “The 90-day extension is something that will most likely be done, because it’s appropriate.” His announcement will coincide with his final inauguration address on Monday.
In an attempt to amplify their grievances, digital creators are abandoning their channels and posting bittersweet goodbyes to their followers while attempting to showcase their concerns.
